italy tour cinque terre

The Cinque Terre is a collection of 5 villages dotted along the spectacular Italian Riviera. There are no cars in this part of the world, no trains or public transport and the only means of traveling between each of these towns is by taking one of the hiking trails which runs between them although thankfully you can avail of a private driver and luxury tour to help with reaching these areas.

Each part of the “Five Lands” is unique in terms of character and there is no modern architecture in sight which gives these villages an antique like appearance as they sit overlooking the Mediterranean.

Possibly the most iconic of all five villages is on a trip to Vernazza which takes the appearance of a small fishing village. There is a beautiful 15th Century castle overlooking the town and a very ancient church sitting precariously on a rock next to the ocean while the town is full of fine restaurants, quaint guesthouses and fishermen going about their daily tasks.

Riomaggiore is another village overlooked by a beautiful castle and one of two locations along this stretch which offers the opportunity to go scuba diving. However, this particular town is better known for the amazing wine produced in the locality, the serene garden on the top of a nearby cliff an the fact that it is also a little less touristy compared the neighboring towns.

The quiet town of Manarola has a small cove which is idyllic for swimming along with an excellent hiking trail all the way up to Punta Bonfiglio. When you are finished with the activities, a cluster of tightly packed houses leads down into the small village which offers an unforgettable combination of tasty wine and rich local foods.

Monterosso is very much the most popular for tours to Cinque Terre with what seems like an endless number of hotels and colorful late night scene. It won't be for everyone but the centre of town still possesses the same charm found along the coast with a myriad of alleys and shopping lanes to get lost within.

Corniglia is the quietest of them all which is situated at the very top of a steep climb and away from the edge of the ocean. That being said, it is most certainly worth the visit with a rich history, even more fine wine and a number of ancient churches and ruins in the area to discover.

It's a haven for hiking, a melting pot of culture and every photographers dream. When you return from your trip to Italy, the one photograph which will stand out amongst all the others, is likely to have been one taken on the famous Cinque Terre.
